Beer review: Some of the best brews

David Hoehler takes a sip at some craft beers and throws in his opinion.

Nottingham Road Brewery: Pickled Pig Porter

Nottingham Road brewery has been around forever. I have always steered away from their Porter, as it looked too heavy for me. But after trying it I realised I have been missing out. It’s not as heavy as I expected and has a stunning coffee/chocolate flavour profile.

The Great Railroad Brewing Company: Oktoberfest Beer

This brewery is based right here just outside Ballito, so you don’t get more local than this. This lager is dark with a malty flavour. It has a bit of a dry finish but is a great interpretation of the Bavarian style Marzen lager. The fact that it’s brewed right on our doorstep makes it quite special and I really hope that they grow from strength to strength!

Soweto Gold: Apple Ale

I have had some craft apple ciders before and was a bit nervous to try this ale, but to be honest this was my favourite out of the whole selection! I don’t know how they pulled it off, but the makers have managed to really bring out a true apple flavour. It is amazing and tastes just like you have bitten into a fresh, crisp green apple. You have to try this one.

The Keghouse: Bottle Blonde

A easy drinking, super smooth beer, it is a nice balance between a lager and ale. Since I have been dabbling in the fine art of beer pairing, my recommendation would be to enjoy this with seafood. It has a wonderful mild flavour – perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Darling Brew: Slow Beer

This was definitely one of the beers that I was looking forward to trying as I have heard so much about it. It is mild and easy drinking making it perfect for a lazy Sunday.
