Salt Rock’s Alice Perks aka Alice May has rekindled those cute childhood boiled egg and soldiers breakfast memories with the invention of the trendy dippy egg board.
“Eating a boiled egg in an egg-cup is always so messy. I wanted to create something that makes this yummy treat easier to enjoy,” said the creative, fun-loving, graphic design entrepreneur.
Together with her practically-minded husband, Richard, they created the ‘dippy egg board’ in 2011.
“Rich invented the little tool to make the perfect groove for the egg to sit in, while I created the designs, such as the soldier, on the A-grade bamboo board.”
Along with Alice’s hand-crafted stationery range, the dippy egg boards made their first public appearance at the Litchi Orchard Market.
“Rich did not think anyone would buy the boards, but before long they were selling faster than the stationery,” said the winner of the 2005 young entrepreneur of the year award and former Froggie shoe designer.
The couple’s love for quality, bamboo products and the success of the boards led to the start of The Block Shop.
“Rich has been into custom-made furniture and kitchens for about seven years now. He can make anything and has a beautiful eye for design. We started creating different bamboo blocks to make a foodie’s life easier.”
There is a block for every need and want, be it the everyday block, carving block, braai block, magic knife block or the snack block.
They chose bamboo because it is a very hard wood, yet light and therefore easy to handle.
“It is such a hygienic wood for the kitchen. Bamboo is classified as a ‘grass’ and has tightly packed fibres, making it hard for juices to penetrate the surface of the block. These fibres make bamboo a knife-friendly wood and it is more scratch resilient than other woods. So while supporting the longevity of our environment, you will also have a life long friend for your kitchen.”
