Up close and personal with Shirley Howells

Shirley has won numerous awards for both drawing and painting and her work has been judged "best on show" by both selectors and the public.

North Coast Artists presents an art demonstration in oils by internationally renowned artist, Shirley Howells on Saturday morning July 9 from 9am to noon at 2 Newport Avenue, Virginia, in the Church Hall.

Shirley has won numerous awards for both drawing and painting and her work has been judged “best on show” by both selectors and the public.

“One of my works was included in an international book on still life/flowers and I was a featured artist in January/February 2012 issue of The South African Artist magazine when my work was featured on the cover. Two of my paintings are included in the “Unity Canvas”, commemorating 9/11, which has been on display throughout the United States.

“In 2012, one of my paintings was selected by the movie producer Anant Singh to be used in the movie ‘Long Walk to Freedom’,” she said.

“A Capetonian by birth, I love painting places and people from “way back when” or as I remember things and places, so some of my favourite paintings are of vineyards, flower sellers, fisher folk, the West Coast, the people of Hout Bay and the seaside resorts where I spent so much of my youth.”

Being a Durbanite by adoption has also meant a strong pull towards African culture, faces and villages.

Shirley started painting in watercolours and has painted in all media but currently works almost exclusively in oils. Her art has been described as “traditional modern impressionism”.

Entrance is R40 with refreshments included.
