Hirsch’s Ballito’s new Junior Super Chef competes in Durban
Our Hirsch's Ballito Junior Super Chef competes at the The East Coast Radio House and Garden Show today at 5.30 pm.
Children between the ages of eight and 13 recently cooked up a storm at the annual Hirsch’s Ballito Junior Super Chef competition.
Set up in a mod, mini-kitchen sponsored by Defy Applicances, Snappy Chef, Zwillin and Green Pan, the little chefs had one hour to create two dishes of their choice, using the the basket of mystery ingredients.
The creative cooks were closely watched, and admired, by the panel of judges: Chelsea Campbell, Lewaine Von Alleman and The North Coast Courier’s David Hoehler and former Masterchef constestant, Joani Mitchell.
“When I was this age, fried egg was difficult to cook. I am blown away by the unbelievable talent and ideas such young children come up with,“ said Mitchell.
Nine-year-old Alexandra da Silva was crowned the winner, as she wowed the judges with her red pepper stuffed chicken roulade, topped with a sauce of her own, and served with a dessert of lemon flapjacks.
Da Silva took home a Defy stick blender and has made it into the finals of Junior Super Chef 2016, which take place at the Celebrity Kitchen at The East Coast Radio House and Garden Show today (Friday, July 8 at 5.30pm.)
The overall winner will get a Defy microwave, a Snappy Chef induction hob, a Zwilling pot set, a Defy pressure cooker and a Hirsch’s Cookbook. Second place winner gets a Defy juice extractor, a Snappy Chef knife set and a Hirsch’s Cookbook, and the third prize is a Defy kettle and toaster, a Defy blender and a Hirsch’s Cookbook.
