Mud, monsters and maniacs
More than 3500 warriors, from the super fit athletes competing for glory and prizes in the Elite divisions, to couch potatoes that feel a side strain just thinking about exercise, took on the obstacles at this year's event.
Mud, sweat, teamwork and lots of laughs marked the fourth instalment of the hugely popular Jeep Warrior Race that hit the trails at an unseasonably wet Sugar Rush Park outside Ballito this past weekend.
More than 3500 warriors, from the super fit athletes competing for glory and prizes in the Elite divisions, to couch potatoes that feel a side strain just thinking about exercise, took on the obstacles at this year’s event.
The Warrior race series has built up a strong and loyal following since its inception in 2013.
Apart from participants traveling all over the country to compete in every race, there is also a large contingent of businesses that use it as a social and team building event.
“We love the Warrior and entered 23 staff into the race this year – let’s just say that everyone’s varying levels of fitness is what makes it so much fun,” said Simon Peacock, owner of RE/MAX Dolphin.
In the 20km Black Ops Elite races Thomas van Tonder (01:40:07) and Hanneke Dannhauser (02:13:26) won the men’s and women’s races respectively.
Jeep Team’s celebrity competitor, Hlubi Mboya, competed in the Commando Elite Women’s Race, and said of her race, “This was one of the hardest Warrior Races I have ever competed in. It took me two hours but I refused to give up my band and be disqualified, even when it meant trying to complete an obstacle over and over again.”
Mboya’s inspiring tenacity saw her just short of a Top 10 place in the Commando Elites.
The Warrior Commando (10km) women’s race was bagged by Daniella Lushington in a time of 01:21:17 and the Rookie Elite (8km) was won by Adrian Roussel (00:31:41) and for the women Chante Habib (00:40:49).
The results for the men’s race were contested and are still to be released.
