Ballito’s Elvis honours the King of Pop
Climbing through the ranks as an ETA, Doug has certainly cemented his place as one of South Africa’s top Elvis tribute artists.
Thirty-seven years ago, on August 16, 1977, legend, musical icon and King of rock ’n’ roll Elvis Presley died.
His passing certainly shook the world, and almost four decades later, his music is widely appreciated by billions of people.
In honour of the late pop star, iZulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino brings you our popular local tribute artist Doug Weich backed by an eight-member band called MSG to pay tribute to the King of Rock n’ Roll and other great performers on Saturday September 3 at 8pm.
Tickets are R150 each, book through Computicket.
Based in Ballito where he lives with his wife, Antoinette and two daughters, Claire and Vanessa, Doug Weich is a well-established ETA (Elvis Tribute Artist) who’s been performing since a young age.
He realised his calling to be an ETA, taking inspiration from Elvis vinyl LP records, as a kid, “but I used to mime rather than sing,” said Doug whose passion for Elvis really comes through in his performance.
Doug started his career at a karaoke bar, (Porky’s in Umhlanga) and never looked back.
Climbing through the ranks as an ETA, Doug has certainly cemented his place as one of South Africa’s top Elvis tribute artists. He has performed around South Africa and at Rhumbelow Theatre for the past five years.
He has the voice, the gyrating moves down to a fine art and the necessary rhinestone costumes, made lovingly by Antoinette.
“I work in the day so I sew his outfits after hours, many times till the early hours of the morning,” said she said.
“I have just done an eagle on his cape using 4000 beads.
“We import the rhinestones from the States as you cannot get them in South Africa.
“Doug will change his outfit a few times per performance.”
Doug has performed many times for charities and fondly remembers his first performance at a fund-raiser at Umhlali Primary School.
