Jesse Clegg sings at The Barnyard

Descending from a musical family, Jesse spent the first six years of his life on tour with his father, iconic South African singer Johnny Clegg.

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is proud to host Jesse Clegg for the first time on Friday, September 9.

Jesse Clegg released his new album, Things Unseen, on June 1, which is the first locally recorded album since his first album, When I Wake Up.

The album was produced by Denholm Harding (of Just Jinjer) in Potchefstroom at Light Stain Studios and in Johannesburg at B Sharp Studios; it was mixed by Denholm and Ewald Van Rensburg.

Descending from a musical family, Jesse spent the first six years of his life on tour with his father, iconic South African singer Johnny Clegg.

Jesse has achieved much in the eight short years he has been active in the music industry.

This singer-songwriter’s 2008 debut album, When I Wake Up, and his 2011 follow-up, Life On Mars, both made the 28-year-old a Platinum-selling success in South Africa – a considerable feat in a market where rock is a niche genre.

After the widespread acclaim of his first album, Jesse’s music caught the attention of three-time Grammy-winning Canadian producer David Bottrill (Muse, Tool and Placebo), who produced his second album.

Jesse started writing the songs for his latest album, Things Unseen, whilst in New York in 2013, and finished all the writing back home in South Africa in his own studio in Johannesburg.

Jesse explains how the album was recorded, “It was a fantastic and challenging experience, I wanted to move away from guitar as my primary writing instrument and incorporate new elements.

“Many of the songs were written with piano and electro soundscapes and rhythms. Technology played a big part in the making of the productions, using the studio as a tool to arrange the music around the emotional quality of the songs.”

Things Unseen, features ten original tracks, with Use Me and Souvenir being the first two singles released last year. His latest single, Breathing ft. Shekhinah was released on Saturday, May 14 to an amazing response which saw the song play listed immediately.

The latest offering was released as Jesse returned off of a massive North American tour, which saw him play 35 shows and drive over 27000 kilometres.

Part of the appeal of The Barnyard Theatre for live music is that it is an intimate venue with great sound and lighting. Audience members can also meet the band in the bar after the show to buy paraphernalia and get autographs. Tickets are R150 per person, and seating will be as for normal shows, with no standing room.

For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031-5663045 or visit www.barnyard.durban.
