Ballito’s Yuvesshan Pillay living to the rhythm

Pillay has tried all sorts of dancing, including ballet and freestyle, but his passion has always been in ballroom and Latin American.

For the past 21 years, Ballito’s Yuveshan Pillay has been swinging a leg in time to the music and he is currently doing so on stage at the annual Shall We Dance show at The Playhouse Theatre.

“My parents started dancing socially and competitively when I was about 10, which was my exposure to the dance world,” said Pillay, who is an area manager in the retail industry by day.

“Dancing gives me a multitude of emotional feelings, transporting me into a different world that is carefree, relaxing, passionate and full of fun.”

Pillay has tried all sorts of dancing, including ballet and freestyle, but his passion has always been in ballroom and Latin American.

“I practice three to four times a week, sometimes more depending on my schedule. I appreciate all styles of dancing, because every dance has a different emotion. For example, the Cha Cha is flirty and cheeky, the Rumba is a dance of love and the Samba is a rhythmical Brazilian carnival celebration.”

While many a woman has tried to get her man to shake his hips to the music without success, Pillay said men should not shy away from the dance scene.

“Dancing is an awesome way to spend time together and it is great exercise. Who would not want to be up close and personal with the one they adore. Also it is a good way for guys to meet with the ladies and vice versa. So it is a win win.”

Make sure to see Yuveshan Pillay in action on the stage at Shall We Dance, showing until September 17.

Tickets can be booked at Computicket (www.computicket.co.za or 0861 915 8000) and cost R90.
