KwaDukuza crowds go wild for Maskandi star

The crowd became uncontrollable when the Maphumulo-born star came on stage and they broke the fence to get closer to the dynamic artist.

Thousands of maskandi fans showed “mega love” for Sbongiseni “Mjikijelwa” Ngubane at the Imvunge Maskandi Festival in KwaDukuza Recreational Grounds last Saturday.

The crowd became uncontrollable when the Maphumulo-born star came on stage and they broke the fence to get closer to the dynamic artist.

Ngubane has become one of SA’s maskandi giants and has a reputation for his excellent guitar skills and stylish lifestyle.

“I love you all and thanks for the support you have shown me and other maskandi artists. It is raining and still you to show up in numbers. Thank you,” he said.

He was also celebrating his 33rd birthday and his fans came into the stage with a birthday cake for him.

Other artists, Ali Mgube also from Maphumulo and Mthandeni Manqele from Emtubatuba, came to celebrate with him.
Manqele, Mgube and Ngubane formed a group called Ondabuzekwayo last year as a symbol of peace within the maskandi industry.

He started his music career in 2001 as a dancer and composer under the mentorship of the late Khulekani ‘Mgqumeni’ Khumalo from Enquthu. He released his first solo album in 2009.

He composes and lead four groups (Umjik’jelwa, Amangcukumane, Omenzelwa and Ichalaha likaShafuza) and release albums every year through his own company, Mjikijelwa Music Production.

The 12-string guitarist has been nominated for various traditional music awards, including the SATMAs and AmaNtshontsho Awards.

The crowds were also treated to the performances of Khuzani Mpungose, Dlubheke Khuzwayo, Osaziwayo, Abafana baka Mgqumeni, Ama SAP, Shwi Nomtekhala and Mthandeni Manqele.
The event was hosted by KwaDukuza municipality and department of Arts and Culture.
