A sweet treat at Cappeny Estate
Although the strawberry picking season has come to an end, people can still buy fresh strawberries directly from the farm
The past weekend’s weather was perfect for a warm day of strawberry picking as family and friends made their way to Cappeny Estate on Saturday for the last day of the strawberry picking season.
The sweet six and a half hector ‘pick your own’ strawberry farm located on Esenembe road has in the past two years played host to people looking for a fun-filled and unique day out.
Behind the farm is a humble power couple Yoliswa and Xolani Gumede who say that despite the hard work, opening the farm is a decision they do not regret.
“My husband wanted to go into farming and before we actually started, a lot of research went into it. We have an amazing team of people who work extremely hard.
“The farm is becoming busier and during the festive season we saw so many people coming in to pick their own strawberries and enjoy a great day out on the North Coast.
“On December 31, we had more than 1 000 visitors to the farm.”

The couple were also proud to announce that they will be expanding the strawberry farm by an additional two hectors, making it a strawberry filled eight and a half hectors.
“The strawberry farm is a unique and romantic idea. I think that it appeals to families because it’s a great way for parents to show kids where food comes from. We are also constructing a venue for people to gather.”
The strawberry picking season has ended but will start again around May and June. However, people can still buy fresh strawberries directly from the farm.
