Tea and art with Dane

For his work, he enjoys accurate representation with an element of "chaos"

Enjoy a morning of creative inspiration with other fellow art enthusiasts and chat with contemporary artist, Dane Stops over a cuppa and snacks on February 11 at Church Hall, Newport Avenue, Virginia.

Dane is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Durban.

He has a degree from the department of visual communication at the Durban University of Technology, where he has also been working as a part-time lecturer for a number of years.

He has recently submitted for a master’s degree which revolves around representations of the nude figure, for which he is awaiting results.

For his work, he enjoys accurate representation with an element of “chaos”.

In this way there is a balance between the controlled and uncontrolled mark. Stops works with various media, from traditional drawing tools such as pencils and pens, to paint such as acrylic and spray paint.

“Drawing is one of the most important tools for an artist, as it creates a foundation for the visual language employed through the chosen medium,” said Stops.

Working with a range of media has allowed various extreme scales to be explored, from four metre high figures to miniature three centimeter drawings.

Stops has taken part in a number of group exhibitions and has done live art at various events. He has been an active contributor to the Durban mural and graffiti scene for over a decade. His work has various influences, from painting graffiti to figurative subject matter such as people and birds.

The entrance fee is R40, which includes tea, coffee and snacks. The event is from 9am till 12pm and you need to take the entrance just after Danville High School.
