Restaurant review: meals under R30 in Ballito

It's not easy to find a great tasting meal for under R30, but it is possible

This might come as a surprise to most of you but my full time job isn’t being The Courier’s official food critic. My day job is working as one of the advertising consultants.

This means I spend most of my day driving around seeing clients, and often have to eat on the run. Over time I have discovered a number of great deals around town.

It’s not easy to find a great tasting meal for under R30, but it is possible. Here are a few of my favourites.

Sound Café

Tucked away in Warne House, Sound Café has become one of my ‘go to’ places for breakfast – my number one pick. They do a Jr Breakfast that includes a fried egg, bacon, tomato, homemade chips and toast for a whopping R20!

By far the best bang for your buck you can find, and if that’s not good enough you can have a cappuccino or fruit juice with your breakfast for an extra R15. It’s well worth the visit.

Food Lovers

They offer some amazing freshly made wraps. It is a healthier option to choose and the service is great too.

Alternately try their Rib burger and chips for R29. It is outstanding value for money and a proper portion.

Picadeli Café

Sometimes my sweet tooth gets the better of me, and I have found the cure.

Picadeli have a waffle and ice-cream for R28. Besides the price the quality of the waffle is unrivalled (absolutely divine), add fresh soft serve ice-cream and I’m finished. You are in for a treat with this one.

Saffron

I know many of you have fallen to the temptation of their samosas when shopping at the Ballito Bay Mall, but if you venture inside you will find my ultimate guilty pleasure.

The chip and cheese roti is a firm favourite. It comes in at R30 and is a combination of a few of my favourite things (namely cheese and curry). It’s a simple dish.

French fries and cheese served with mutton gravy (curry sauce) all rolled into a roti. It’s the bomb.

Checkers

The best way to end off a chip and cheese roti is to pop past the “sweet counter” outside Checkers. They offer a heap a treats from dounuts to pancakes and ice-cream.

The ice-cream is my favourite, and is dirt cheap.

A cup is R4 for either strawberry or vanilla and if you want it dipped it’s an extra R1.49. You can even add a flake and you are still in for under R10. Its not often you find a deal like that.
