Local women refuse to be victims
A local DUT student is now offering self-defense classes for women in Tongaat
The high rate of woman and child abuse motivated a Durban University of Technology student, Anrea Munsamy, to start self defense classes for women in Tongaat.
The first class was held at the Belvedere Community Hall on Saturday, July 14.
“I was disturbed by how often I read similar headlines or stories of women or kids being raped, murdered and kidnapped. Thinking of the same happening to someone in my family pushed me into doing something to help,” said Munsamy.
She contacted coach Nesh Maharaj from Fighters Edge Fight Club and he agreed to help her.
Munsamy is doing her final year of her national diploma in human resource management and she had been involved with different NPOS and voluntary projects since primary school.
This year she started a women and youth community organisation called ‘Achieving Life with Purpose’, focusing on fitness, skills development and voluntary work.
“I was very happy with the attendance of the first class. To me was a success and I am very grateful to all that attended,” said Munsamy.
Munsamy says she will be arranging more self defense classes soon. Follow ‘Achieving Life with Purpose’ on Facebook for the dates of future classes.
