Celebrating brave women through dance
The performance will bring together mentors of local dance to celebrate women and their achievements
Owned by talented Seatides choreographer and director Iqraam Rahim, Ramage Dance Company will be celebrating women’s day with a production at the Durban Playhouse Drama Theatre on Friday, August 4.
Known for his unique style of mixing music and movement Rahim said the NAACH – the Nature of Dance production was inspired by the historical event of women from all walks of life uniting in a march to the Union Building in 1956.
“Dance is a language. We present dance work that in its very essence gives voice to many dance styles.
“The performance will bring together mentors of local dance to celebrate women and their achievements.
“Dancers like Anisha Maharaj and Kajal Misra will join us on stage after retiring years ago. I was inspired by the story of a cancer survivor, Shivani Singh, who found her strength in dance. Shivani finds herself at the heart of ‘Oruyagum’, a piece that speaks to strength, determination, victory and celebration. We also have Heena Valabh, a classically trained dancer and medical student.”
Rahim said the NAACH production seeks to reach out a helping hand to dance schools and institutes who have found themselves left behind in the progressive dance movement because of a lack of resources.
Presented within a Bollywood framework, NAACH – the Nature of Dance shows will debut for one night only at Durban’s Playhouse Drama Theatre on Friday August 4 at 7.30pm. Tickets at R150 are available through Computicket.
