Five steps to sushi bliss
Before you go for your next fancy fish outing, read the following five tips to help make your nigiri night even more delicious.
Whether you are a California roll kind of girl or a hard core sashimi lover, sushi is a delicious treat all year round.
Even more so with the warmer summer months approaching when you want to enjoy a lighter meal.
Learn how to enjoy your sushi in style with these top tips:
1. Dip, don’t drown
We all love adding soy sauce to the sushi mix, but there is nothing worse than watching your perfect sushi piece disintegrate in your soy sauce bowl leaving you to fish out those rice kernels, only to try stick it all back together then. Sushi etiquette prescribes that you just dip your sushi into the soy sauce gently, with the fish side first.
You want the soy sauce to complement the delicate flavours of your sushi, not drown it. On that note, it is polite to only pour a small amount of soy sauce into your bowl and to top it up regularly.
2. Keep the ginger separate
The pretty, pink ginger is meant to cleanse your palate in between the sushi bites. So don’t shovel it on top of your sushi, keep it aside for those in between moments.
3. Go big or go home
Bluefin Tuna Sushi is the most costly in the world. Almost 80% of all the Bluefin tuna caught in the world is used for sushi.
The highest price ever paid for a sushi grade Bluefin Tuna was R5 484 600 for a 754 pound fish on January 4, 2011 at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo.
4. Commit to the bite
While you might feel intimidated by the size of that fashion sandwich, it is best to just commit and eat the whole piece in one go. You don’t want to end up trying to eat half of it only to have the other half crumble into a million pieces in your hand.
Sushi should be small enough to be eaten in one bite, so that you get that beautiful blend of flavours all together.
5. Scrap the sticks
Forget getting your fingers in a knot while you try to elegantly lift some sushi with chopsticks.
The Japanese etiquette is to eat maki and nigiri with your hands and to only bring out the chopsticks for sashimi.
