A new page for Shakaskraal mom
Inspired by writers like Alan Paton and JK Rowling, Maraj hopes to motivate other writers not to give up.
Patience and faith paid off for Shakaskraal mother Kesri Maraj when her dream of becoming a published author finally became reality after nine years.
Last December, the 31-year-old author published her book ‘Katchina’, a story that tells the adventures of a Native Indian American archaeologist and six of his friends who went on a trip to Alaska.
Their journey to the frozen North captivates readers with a story of mystery, travel, exploration and adventure that all begins when the mysterious past of an ancient and cursed box, called Katchina, comes to life.

Driven by her love for literature, Maraj said although the manuscript of her colourful masterpiece took only four months to complete, it took almost nine years to publish.
“After matric, I knew I wanted to become an author because of my love for literature.
“Finally, years later I was browsing online and came across a publishing house. I contacted them immediately and six weeks later my book was published.”
Inspired by writers like Alan Paton and JK Rowling, Maraj hopes to motivate other writers not to give up.
‘Katchina’ is available on e-book at amazon.com, eBay and Partridge House. To buy a hard copy, contact Kesri Maraj at 083 336 1100.
