80’s heart-throb Pierre de Charmoy at Sibaya
Concertgoers are guaranteed a night of fun, laughter, toe-tapping and hip-swaying music with an artist engraved in the history and hearts of South Africans.
After 34 years in the music industry, professional singer-songwriter and 80’s heartthrob Pierre de Charmoy is set to take fans on a wild ride down memory lane as he reflects on his musical journey at The Rockwood Theatre.
Known for his distinctive voice and good looks, De Charmoy first shot to fame in the 1980s, releasing the likes of ‘Live On’ and ‘You’re My Lady.’
He won the SAMA award for Best Male Vocalist three years in a row (1983, 1984, 1985) and to this day still strikes a chord with both old and new fans alike.
De Charmoy’s musical interests date back to an early age when he started composing songs and arranging music for the popular Sunday Folk Church Services at the St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg.
It was here that his talent for singing, songwriting and performing and where his passion was ignited. On completion of his two years of service in the military, he moved to Johannesburg in the late 1980’s where he soon found himself playing gigs and visiting recording studios.
RPM Records signed De Charmoy, recorded and released his first seven-single album Lonely Hearts in December 1981.
Enormous interest was sparked by this album and de Charmoy was awarded the Most Promising New Artist accolade at the annual South African Music Awards the following year.
Having tasted success in all its glory, de Charmoy made sure this album was quickly followed up with the album Ovation, featuring his smash number one single ‘Live On’ and again he won an award, this time for the Best Male Vocalist.
Reaching Out followed in 1983 with singles ‘Reaching out’ and ‘You’re my lady’, topping the charts.
It was also around this time that this dynamic artist decided to shine in other fields such as acting, presenting a few different aspects of the entertainment world by acting in a movie Tawwe Tinnies, and hosting a number of television shows; these included Prime Time, Graffiti and No Jacket Required.
