Located at the bottom of Ballito next to Ballito Spar, Captain Tipsy’s has been open for a while now.
Just because I am a food critic and ex chef, does not mean I only appreciate fine dining.
Few things are as fun as sitting around a table with some friends enjoying some good old pub grub.
The venue is bright and friendly with some excellent views across the sea.
Sitting on the balcony was very relaxing.
The menu is very much pub grub with some nice additions, like wraps.

I did battle to make up my mind on what to have – it was a tough decision between building my own snack basket and the chicken schnitzel, though I eventually went with the chicken, which was a fantastic choice.
I opted for the cheese sauce, which was well executed and the home style fries where divine.
The chicken had a good crust and was still moist which can be the downfall of many schnitzels.

My dining companions had the crispy prawn wrap and a chicken hamburger.
Both meals went down a treat.
The perinaise sauce that came with the wrap stole the show.
The chicken burger was on special for R50, which is bang for your buck if you are looking for a reasonably priced meal.

The staff were fine, friendly and attentive.
There are two points that I must mention: first, their caramel milkshakes are divine.
Second, they have a chilli/peri peri sauce on the table that I could eat by the bucket load.
It had the perfect balance of flavour and heat.
I cannot fault them on too much as they do a stand-up job.
Remember to manage your expectations when you eat somewhere new.
You cannot go to a pub and expect silver service, but in the same breath do not go to a fine dining establishment anf complain when you are paying R180 for a main meal.
But in both scenarios, you should expect good service!
