Chefs’ cook-off serves up goodwill

Thousands raised for Umhlali SAPS trauma unit.

The spectacular food created by the Master Chef cook-off competitors at Ballito’s Mozambik restaurant last Wednesday put the audience in a generous mood with the evening bringing in a proud R35 000 for the Umhlali SAPS trauma unit.

The eatery was packed for the event, drawing 120 people to watch eight chefs battle it out for the crown.

After fierce competition, it was the Chapman brothers, Barry and Jason, who outclassed the other six contestants, including North Coast Courier foodie, David Hoehler.

Jason took the honours in the final with his sublime prawn and chicken chilli wrap, only just beating his brother’s dish of garlic butter prawns, spring rolls with spring onion, prawns and sprouts with a chicken butter sauce and sweet potato chips.

The Chapman brothers both won restaurant vouchers that they donated back to the station.

“We need to support the police and not wait until we need them. So I encourage residents to give them their full support,” said Jason.

There were also plenty of goodies up for auction. Ballito resident Ben Smith took the package of 12 restaurant vouchers, one for every month of the year for a princely R5000, the biggest bid for the day, which he also then donated back to the station.

Event organiser Lisa Burgess said the money would be used to create an outdoor play area at the trauma centre.

“The trauma centre at the station does not get funding from the state, so the money donated is highly appreciated. We thank everyone who made the day possible,” said Burgess.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay was at a loss for words to express his gratitude.

“I want to say thanks a million times to all the people who supported the event,” said Vinny.
