Small changes can be made to upgrade your home
While South Africans continue to feel financially burdened in the weak economy, homeowners need not forget all their hopes and dreams of upgrading. Small changes can be made to make rooms feel and look modern. In time for Spring, here are a few ways to upgrade your home on a budget.

The 2018 FNB Estate Agent Survey has revealed that homeowners are finding it increasingly difficult to take on large scale home renovations and upgrades, and are opting to ensure the regular upkeep of their properties whether occupied privately or property to rent. While this is so, John Loos, FNB Property Sector Strategist says “the home maintenance situation is still perceived to be far stronger than it was during the 2008/9 recession, which is important from a mortgage lender perspective, lenders wishing to see the value of the security backing their loans being maintained as far as possible.”
While fewer homeowners are able to add value to their properties via major upgrades, there are still ways to add value in a small way. Here are a few small changes to make to add extra value to your home:
- Upgrade old fixtures – whether it’s old taps, broken lampshades or puppy eaten skirting boards, replacing these small fixtures will help your property look and feel a bit more modern.
- Repaint – From garage doors, to fences and walls, a fresh coat of painting can make old things look brand new.
- Spring clean – Curtains and carpets can start to look very dull and dirty after years of use. A professional steam clean came make both look far newer than they actually are and brighten up a room.
While smaller upgrades don’t make up for a much needed renovation, they can help a space look upgraded in the meantime and can offer spaces a much needed spring fresh look.
