Ballito bikers swap the open road for helping Westbrook retirees

A combined R31 000 worth of relief was given to residents of the Westbrook Retirement Village.

Ballito bikers traded the open road for a day of giving when they visited Westbrook Retirement Village during a recent charity run.

The North Coast chapter of Unshackled MC raised R15 000 in cash through sponsorships and delivered groceries and essential supplies valued at more than R16 000 on April 25.

The donations were distributed among the home’s 67 residents.

Beyond financial support, the bikers focused on practical improvements, helping resolve electricity issues in the kitchen and repairing air-conditioning units in the main hall. These upgrades have made the hall usable again, creating a more comfortable space for residents.

The club also donated a trailer load of second-hand goods to the home’s thrift store, which helps fund maintenance, and supplied 10 bags of cold tar to assist with filling potholes on the property.

National chairperson Mark Whitehead said the day was not only about donations, but also about building connections.

“We managed to get 100 braai packs sponsored and spent the day braaiing with the residents. Some even enjoyed short rides on our bikes in the car park, which brought plenty of smiles,” he said.

The Ballito chapter has 22 riders and is led by president Alistair Meyer. It forms part of a national organisation founded in 2013, with members committed to community upliftment.

Despite the success of the initiative, the retirement home still faces ongoing challenges. Those wishing to assist can contact the chairperson, Christa Manias, at christamanias@gmail.com or via 082 332 8002.
