Chery Q Elite review: How does it handle North Coast roads?
The comfortable new car is not just a tonic against petrol pressure, it's also an enjoyable drive.
The introduction of the all-electric Chery Q to South Africa could not have been better timed for motorists facing high fuel prices.
But the comfortable new car is not just a tonic against petrol pressure, it’s also an enjoyable drive well suited to life on the growing North Coast. It is big enough to load both kids and a fair amount of luggage, while small enough to zip through tight spaces in town centres.
We tested the car last week, driving from its Umhlali dealership to Tinley Manor, along quieter inland farm roads and through busy lunchtime traffic in Salt Rock. We drove the Elite, the higher-spec version of the two models recently introduced to the local market.
Priced at R389 900, the Chery Q Elite delivers a claimed range of up to 400km. Chery says DC fast charging can take the battery from 30% to 80% in just under 17 minutes, while charging from near-empty to full using a 6.6kW AC home charger takes about six and a half hours.
The spacious interior features a 15.6-inch touchscreen that controls most of the car’s technological features.

We found it mostly user-friendly, with a range of driver-assist options on hand from the main menu.
Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and other warning systems help drivers stay safe, while a 540-degree panoramic camera system makes parking easier. The boot capacity is a solid 375 litres, expanding to 1 450 litres with the back seats folded down. There is also the novelty of an additional 70 litres of storage under the bonnet, a useful feature of some electric cars.
Despite the storage space, neither Chery Q model comes with a spare tyre. Both are supplied with a puncture repair kit instead.
Both Chery Q models (the Comfort is priced at R349 900) sit towards the affordable end of South Africa’s growing electric vehicle market. Plus the driving experience offers plenty of positives for local commuters and shorter day trips.
