THE Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has announced a pass rate of 98.42%, slightly higher than last year’s pass rate of 98.39%.

Anne Oberholzer, the CEO of the IEB, said the performance of the 2022 cohort of students was outstanding.

“There is enough credible research on the impact of Covid-19 on the educational aspects of children to provide insight into where we are at, in coming out of the pandemic almost three years after it started. It is fair to say that it is the 2022 cohort of learners that was hardest hit by the impact of the pandemic when it broke in 2020 in their Grade 10 year. Various strategies have been employed to try and mitigate these – moving teaching to online; pen and paper distance education; catch-up programmes; weekend school lessons and so on – some more successful than others,” she said.

She added that all candidates who passed achieved a pass that grants access to tertiary study at one of the three levels:

89.32% of the cohort achieved entry to degree study, compared to 89.2% in 2021.
7.52% qualified for entry to diploma study, compared to 7.82% in 2021.
1.57% achieved entry for study at the Higher Certificate level, compared to 1.37% in 2021.

On the local front, Northglen News visited Crawford International La Lucia, Our Lady of Fatima, and Reddam House Umhlanga, to hear from some of the top achievers and the principals.

Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School

Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School’s principal, Dee Horsfall, said she was delighted by the results of the class of 2022.

“A total of 66 candidates achieved a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass. Special mention must also go to Ella Potterton who was awarded an IEB Certificate for Outstanding Achievement (for being in the Top 5% in six or more subjects). Eleni Chambi also performed admirably and was awarded an IEB Certificate for Commendable Achievement (for being in the Top 5% in five subjects),” Horsfall said.

In all, 27% of candidates attained an aggregate of 80% or above, 76% of candidates attained an aggregate of 70% or above and 100% attained an aggregate of 60% or above.

Reddam House Umhlanga

Reddam House Umhlanga’s matriculants maintained last year’s exceptional IEB NSC results as they obtained a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass rate, said the school’s principal, Adam Rogers.

“A total of 74 full-time candidates were entered for the 2022 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate examinations, in which they achieved a 100% pass rate with a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass. There were 18 A aggregates and 178 subject As (2,4 distinctions per candidate).

“Special mention must also go to Bridget-Leigh de Sousa on the Independent Examinations Board’s Commendable List (top 5% in 5 subjects). She also obtained 100% in Mathematics. We also had 10 rankings in the Top 1% of candidates per subject in South Africa and 43 rankings in the Top 5% of candidates per subject in South Africa,” he said.

Crawford International La Lucia

There was much to celebrate at Crawford International La Lucia where school principal Cal Warwick congratulated the class of 2022 for their results.

“Our matric results were wonderful, and we are very proud of their achievements. I know that every one of our students will be successful in whatever they do, so well done to the Matric Class of 2022. We achieved a 100% pass rate with a number of our learners performing exceptionally,” she said.

Some of the standouts were School DUX Shaneel Govind, who achieved an overall average of 95.38% and eight distinctions, and fellow learner Nisayum Odayar, who achieved an overall average of 94.31% and eight distinctions, and Joseph Lavoipierre, who achieved an overall average of 89% and nine distinctions.
