M41 truck driver to remain behind bars as bail application moved

Sithulile Zulu’s bail application hearing has been moved to March 23.

THE bail application of Sithulile Zulu, the truck driver involved in the multi-vehicle accident on the M41 near uMhlanga on March 6, has been postponed until next week.

The 22-year-old made his second appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the accident which involved more than 45 vehicles and left 16 people injured.

One of those injured was a pregnant mother who had to be airlifted to hospital.

Zulu, who initially fled the scene of the accident, handed himself over to Durban North SAPS more than eight hours later.

He is facing charges of reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with the duties of a driver following an accident.

The serious accident brought the M41 to a complete standstill on Monday last week with paramedics describing the scene as “absolute mayhem.”

It is alleged the brakes of the truck failed causing the multi-vehicle accident which saw Zulu crash through a fence near the M4 hairpin bend almost a kilometre away from the scene.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said Zulu will be remanded into custody.

“The state is opposed to bail and the matter was remanded to 23 March 2023, for a formal bail application,” she said.
