New finish venue for Comrades 2023 race

The 96th Comrades Marathon will finish at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

FOLLOWING a seven-year absence, this year’s the iconic Comrades Marathon will return to its famous finish venue at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

The Ultimate Human Race has had a recent relationship with the Moses Mabhida Stadium but due to a conflict in events, as the stadium is hosting the COSAFA Cup during June, the organisers have chosen Kingsmead as their finish venue.

Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) race director, Rowyn James said the preferred finish for the 48th down run was the cricket stadium

“Kingsmead Stadium is our preferred finish venue for this year’s Down Run, as the venue is accustomed to hosting the Comrades Marathon and the revised route should be an ease in transition for the runners. We would like to thank the team at Moses Mabhida Stadium for partnering with CMA during the 2018 and 2022 races and we look forward to hosting our athletes on Sunday, 11 June.”

Durban’s famous cricket stadium is no stranger to hosting the finish of the Comrades and has done so on many occasions previously and for CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom, it’s a privilege to welcome the historic race back to Kingsmead.

“We’re very proud to welcome the Comrades Marathon back to Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium,” Strydom said. “The race is such an important event for the province of KwaZulu-Natal and for us as a stadium to play a part in the day is special. We wish everyone all the very best for the day and we will welcome runners and spectators with traditional Kingsmead hospitality on the day.”

The 96th Comrades Marathon will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05:30 and finish 12 hours later at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Sunday, June 11.
