Body found of Chatsworth woman swept into river

The body of one of two women who went missing in heavy rain conditions last night has been found, the Rising Sun Chatsworth reports. It is believed the Croftdene, Chatsworth woman went missing yesterday evening after her car was swept into a river. Authorities on the scene are conducting investigations.

Her car was found in a river, about 300m downstream from Silverglen Drive, and was recovered by the Police Search and Rescue Unit and the NSRI. Police then urged motorists to refrain from travelling along Silverglen Drive. Community members came out in numbers to help search for the woman.

Emergency services in the Glen Anil area in the north of Durban also resumed their search for an allegedly missing 62-year-old woman from Sunningdale after she disappeared in Glen Anil at about 6pm last night while travelling home during a torrential downpour, reports Northglen News. The woman’s car was found at the corner of Old North Coast Road and Sneezewood Lane.

The south coast areas are particularly affected by flooding, and in one instance, a family of three was swept off a bridge in the south coast area and they were forced to swim for several kilometres down the river before they reached a place of safety, the South Coast Herald reports.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie further told the South Coast Herald that the following areas were most affected:

• People evacuated in Boboyi and Umzinto;
• The P200 – Izotsha was flooded and as a result, a car was swept off the road and a taxi overturned;
• Cars swept off the road in Nyandezulu and St Faiths roads;
• Reports of flooding on Marine Drive in Oslo Beach.

A post on the N3 Toll Concession Facebook page reports that traffic is flowing along the N3 Toll Route, but cautioned motorists that weather conditions are poor. “Heavy rainfall and mist are currently causing poor visibility along the route and drivers are requested to exercise extreme caution on the road. Reduce speed and keep headlights switched on,” the post warned.

KZN Emergency Medical Service issued the following safety tips, as reported by South Coast Herald:

• When driving, slow down and increase following distances;
• Leave early for work or appointments;
• Do not try and drive though large pools of water or over flooded bridges;
• Report any emergencies to 10177.

The N3 Toll Concession further advised motorists to stay up-to-date with weather and travel warnings via N3TC’s Twitter feed or on the 24-hour Customer Careline, 0800 N3 Help (0800 63 4357).
