Snow could hit parts of SA this weekend
The snowfall is expected in parts of the Western and Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
As winter sets in and the days get colder, parts of South Africa from the Western Cape into the mountainous areas of KwaZulu-Natal could witness some snow this weekend.
According to Snow Report SA, a potentially disruptive weather system, due to make landfall in the Western Cape later this week, could bring snow with it, Ladysmith Gazette reported.
“If the system remains on course, the first snow should fall in the Western Cape on Friday morning over the high peaks. Only light snow is expected in the Western Cape. By Friday afternoon, light snow will continue in the Western Cape over the high peaks,” the snowfall tracking organisation said.
A large part of the Eastern Cape high ground will experience snow, with some areas around Rhodes possibly getting up to 25cm by Saturday morning.
In KwaZulu-Natal, snow could also be present on the southern parts of the Drakensberg and the areas around Kokstad.
“As Saturday progresses, the system will move further into KZN and Lesotho, with some good falls of up to 25cm possible in the Sani Pass area, with the snow coming down into Drakensberg towns like Underberg,” the organisation said on its website.
The snow is expected to stretch into the KZN Midlands during Saturday morning and into the afternoon.
By Saturday night, most falls will be over the Drakensburg in the Eastern Cape as well as in KZN. It will then move into the Free State.
All snow activity will cease during the early hours of Sunday morning, it is predicted, but the forecast may change as the week progresses.
