Shoddy Acutt Avenue shacks and chicken coop demolished
Property owners tell eThekwini Municiplity's Land Use Management Department they would comply with the department's instructions to demolish all unapproved structures on their property.
THE owners of a property in Acutt Avenue, Durban North, who built shacks to rent out and a chicken coop on the property, have told eThekwini Municiplity’s Land Use Management Department they would comply with the department’s instructions to demolish all unapproved structures.
Local councillor, Dean Macpherson, received complaints from residents in the road that there was a change of land use on the property, adding it would affect the values of nearby properties.
He was also concerned about the health implications, not only for the neighbours, but the inhibitants of the property.
The health department will also issue another notice, backing up the need to demolish these structures.
It is believed the front yard was full of building material from the demolition work.
The owners were warned to remove this material as well.
The municipality urged council departments to follow up on the progress, as one structure, at the top of the property, was noticed and hasn’t been demolished.
“I am pleased that action has been taken by the municipality and that the owner understood what corrective action needed to be taken.
”It is vitally important that the community reports any activity that they suggest might be in contravention of the by-laws so that we can see a quick response from the authorities as we have seen in this case,” said Ward 36 councillor, Dean Macpherson.
