Educational holiday activities
HOLIDAYS are certainly about relaxing and having fun, but learning while having fun is even better.

There are some exciting educational activities on offer for children this holiday.
Extra tuition
Up-grade Extra Tuition is offering 3-hour Holiday Workshops with qualified, experienced teachers for Grade 1 to Grade 12 pupils in a variety of subjects. Junior primary school pupils will do an hour of numeracy, an hour of literacy and an hour of crafts, with a break for juice and biscuits at the end of each hour.
Senior primary and high school pupils will concentrate on one subject for the whole session, with refreshment breaks to get to know the other pupils. Up-grade’s classrooms are situated in La Lucia Mall, downstairs, next door to FNB. Workshops in Maths, English, Afrikaans, Physical Science, Life Science, Accounting and History are filling up fast, so don’t miss this opportunity to give your child a head-start on the fourth term.
Workshops cost R350 for the three-hour session. Contact Brett on 082 8777 161 or brett@up-grade.co.za or visit www.up-grade.co.za to book your place.
Basic computer skills
Computers4Kids holiday workshops will teach children basic computer skills depending on their age and computer literacy. Courses cover a range of skills, including internet research for projects, creating posters and presentations for projects, word processing for the older children and an introduction to the basics like mouse work and the keyboard for littlies. Courses run for two hours and cost R120. Contact Malini on 074 113 8364 for more information.
Sharks Board
The Kwa Zulu Natal Sharks Board is a treasure trove of information for children interested in science, nature or the sea. The highlight of a visit is a shark dissection (which parents are likely to find fascinating, too!). An audio-visual presentation introduces you to the world of the shark and the work the Sharks Board does to preserve these ocean predators, followed by the live dissection of a shark. Children have an opportunity to touch and examine the shark close-up afterwards. Show times are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9am and 2pm at a cost of R45 for adults and R25 for children and pensioners. Visit www.shark.co.za for more.
The wonders of science
Gateway’s Science Centre always has something on the go to expand young minds and introduce them to the wonders of science. A variety of exhibits and activities aim to engage children and teach them about scientific concepts in an exciting, dynamic way, a great combination of education and entertainment.
