Birketts on form in London
Mt Edgecombe couple shine at final ITU World Triathlon event.

DESPITE challenging conditions at the ITU World Triathlon last month, Mt Edgecombe residents, Minky and Dave Birkett can hold their heads up high after a superb showing in London. Minky finished 15th while Dave finished 74th.
“The most challenging aspect of the triathlon was the weather. Race organisers had to reduce the swim event to 750m, and around 300 athletes pulled out of the swimming event.
”My hands were so cold after the swim that I lost a few minutes at the transition station,” Dave explained. “Personally I was a little disappointed with my final placing because I felt I was fit enough to make the top 20.”
His wife, Minky, who finished 15th out of 58 competitors said she was extremely pleased with her result.
“Even in the most optimistic state of mind, the top 10 would be great but I was absolutely delighted,” she said.
Both athletes, who are the current KZN triathlete champs in their respective age groups, said key to their success was the support structure they share.
“I don’t think I would be able to do it without Dave,” Minky said.
