Bokke clinch fifth classic world cup
Springbok Legends win Classic World Cup for first time in five years.
THE South African rugby legends claimed their fifth World Rugby Classic with a hard fought 14-7 victory over Argentina in Bermuda.
The last time the boks won the classic was five years ago. Former Sharks’ winger, Henno Mentz, scored two tries for the Springboks with Percy Montgomery kicking two conversions, while Santiago van der Ghotle scored Argentina’s only try, with Federico Todeschini adding the conversion.
Springbok skipper, Ryan Strudwick, said he was thrilled with his charges performance after playing in and losing in three finals.
“The boys showed a lot of character and fighting spirit throughout the game. Argentina were the defending champions so this was never going to be an easy win. We beat the USA 47-7 in the classic semi’s and I felt we carried good momentum into the final.
“This year we had a nice blend of crocks like myself and freshly retired players like Victor Matfield, Gary Botha, Monty (Percy Montgomery) and Albert van den Berg. I’ve played the classic for five years and have been on the losing side, so to win it in the manner we did, was just amazing,” he said.
Strudwick also praised first time legends’ coach Robbie Fleck and said the boks would be back to win it again next year. “As long as our bodies are able and willing, we will be back to defend the title,” he said.
