Con man targets uMhlanga shops

Three shops targeted by con-man who makes off with more than R40 000 in goods.

A CON MAN targeting shops in the area uMhlanga has now been linked to three cases. According to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Lt Raymond Deokaran, the trickster who uses the name Mervyn Reddy, has already scammed a clothing shop and two music shops with the amount totalling more than R40 000.

Reddy allegedly orders items over the phone, uses a fictitious confirmation of deposit and a legitimate courier company to make off with the goods. “In the first incident, he ordered R25 000 worth of equipment and then send a confirmation of deposit to the store owner. He later ordered R17 000 more, sighting that he was extremely happy with the equipment. However when the owner checked his bank balance, none of the amounts reflected.

“He used the same modus operandi to con a shop out of a PA system in the second incident. Again a legitimate courier was used and Reddy sent a fake deposit confirmation,” he said.

Deokaran warned other shops in the area to be aware of the man who comes across as charming and believable over the phone.
