Prestondale speed humps to be installed in 2014

The speed humps that were to be installed in mid-November will only be installed in the new year.

PRESTONDALE residents have been wondering what happened to the speed humps that were scheduled to be installed in the area in mid-November.

Local councillor, Heinz de Boer, said in a previous news report that he was under the impression that speed humps would be installed by mid-November.

“It is extremely disappointing that the residents may have to wait another few months for the installation of bumps,” De Boer said.

“In recent weeks there have been several accidents in Prestondale. A once quiet neighbourhood has been turned upside down by the through roads linking the Gateway region to Izinga and other areas,” he added.

De Boer said he saw the installation of these bumps as more of a social responsibility project than one that should be done after complaint were received. “Developments are not only about providing upmarket estates, but rather ensuring the sustainability of all areas around such estates. The people of Izinga themselves would benefit from the installation of bumps.

“To say that I am disappointed by this development is an understatement. And should the bumps not been installed soon, I will be meeting with the city manager and eThekwini Traffic Authority to discuss implementing conditions attached to all developments in the city,” De Boer said.

Tongaat Hulett said it has, through its consulting engineers, designed speed humps for installation in Izinga when the roads contract for Izinga 2A is awarded.

“While it was anticipated that the necessary permissions to sell in Izinga 2A would be obtained in February 2013, these were received on 26 November,” said Michelle Jean-Louis from Tongaat Hulett.

“In light of the fact that the contractors responsible for the Izinga 2A roads contract will shortly be closing down for the festive season break, it was deemed appropriate to commence this work in January 2014. During the course of the Izinga 2A roads contract, speed humps in Izinga will be installed,” she added.
