Taxi violence erupts in Durban North

Intersection turned into warzone as more than 20 shots are fired in assasination attempt.

A SHOOTOUT rocked Durban North (at the intersection of Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) and Swapo (Broadway) Road) last night after an alleged hit on the chairman of the KwaDukuza Taxi Association, Sanele Zondi (36). According to the Durban North police at least 30 rifle shots were fired in the attempted killing.

Though the police could not say whether a rival taxi association was involved, taxi wars have been brewing between the Dolphin Coast and KwaDukuza Taxi Association over routes and commuters business in the Ballito area.

A member of the taxi association said he believed Zondi was followed from Stanger and that professional hit men were involved. He added he could not comment for fear of jeopardising the case.

Zondi escaped any serious injury. A case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property has been opened at the Durban North police station.
