Freedom Day celebrations marred by kidnapping
A woman was kidnapped, robbed and sexually assaulted while waiting for a taxi last week.
FREEDOM Day celebrations enjoyed by millions of South Africans around the country on Sunday turned out to be anything but ‘free’for a woman who was kidnapped, robbed and sexually assaulted by three armed men.
Her ordeal started on Saturday, 26 April when she was waiting under a bridge in Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) for a taxi. According to police a white car stopped under the bridge and a man climbed out of the car to urinate next to the woman.
“Another man jumped out of the car, grabbed the woman from behind and shoved her inside the car. While inside the car, one armed man started molesting her, telling her he wanted to have sex with her,” said the station’s spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo.
Her ordeal worsened when the men refused to drop her off where they picked her up from and dumped her in the Glen Anil industrial area. There, a security guard saw the traumatised woman crying and contacted the police.
“She told police the three men stole her handbag and other goods worth R3 000, which included her cellphone, cash and airtime. She said she would be able to identify the men who had robbed, sexually assaulted and kidnapped her if she saw them again,” Lt Naidoo added.
No arrests have been made as yet and the woman, according to police is still reeling from shock.
