Disbaled bowls champs a success

The finals of the bowls champs were played at Northlands Bowling Club.

THE South African National Disability Bowls Championships were held in Durban recently at three bowling clubs; Durban BC, Sherwood BC and Northlands BC, which was the convening club.

Bowlers from all over the country from the National Association for Blind Bowlers (NABB) and from the Physically Disabled Bowls Association of South Africa (PDBSA) played the finals at Northlands Bowling Club.

Dave Brosnihan, long time member of the club said he was blown away by the skills of the bowlers. “In the blind bowlers section there are four categories ranging from B (totally blind), to B4 (slightly impaired vision). Blind bowlers have a director, who chaperones and coaches them and during a game indicates distance and direction of the shots to be played.

“It was a truly humbling experience to see the dedication of the directors and the amazing ability of the bowlers, many of whom bowled within an inch of the jack. Participating in this event has given us much to be grateful for in our own lives and an appreciation and respect for the dedication and skill of the players taking part,” he said.
