MissFits triumph in bruising bout

All the roller derby action from the second bout.

PURPLE was the dominant colour, both in terms of the winning team’s colours and the bruises sported by both sets of players, as Durban Derby settled only its second ever bout in front of a sold out crowd at Hillcrest Primary School recently. The scoreline was tight with both teams neck and neck, but in the last two jams of the contest, it was the MissFits who reigned victorious 231-228 against Eve’s Kanevils.

Amy Bennett (Capt’n Crash) and co-captain of the MissFits said she was stoked with the victory. “The game was so close, and our scores were constantly changing with each team taking the lead at some point or another.

“I remember looking up at the scoreboard after the final whistle and not actually believing that we had won. I was so emotional. Probably also due to being completely physically exhausted,” she said.

“Both teams had been training super hard to make it a great night, especially for our supporters, and the fact that it was our first proper Durban Derby League team vs team game. We all had a lot riding on it, so you could feel the competitive tension and vibe from all the players involved.”

Amy said she was blown away by the vociferous support from the sell out crowd.

“I’m amazed and so grateful the people of Durban came out to support us. Honestly, their support always makes such a difference when you are playing, and we love to interact with our supporters and make it a worthwhile evening out for them.

“We hope to grow to bigger and better things in the future, hopefully with a bigger venue too, so that more people are able to come watch,” she added.

Interested in joining Durban Derby

“The next fresh meat intake is officially from 1 July for 12 weeks. But for June, new/interested skaters are welcome to come for a ‘look-in’ skate with us if they are wanting to find out more about whether they would be keen to do the 12 week introductory course.
