THERE are several new faces taking part in the fifth annual Durban & Coast SPCA Kennel Sleepover this month.

The sleepover sees residents brave the kennels at the association’s Springfield Park premises and be ‘bailed’ out to give back to animals in need.

This year 27 people will brave the cold for one night to raise funds for the SPCA, which is celebrating 130 years of service.

The sleepover also coincides with International Homeless Animals Day (August 15), a day to educate people about homeless and abandoned animals.

One of the new faces taking on the challenge this year is Durban North resident and estate agent, Vanessa Champion.

“I’ve always loved animals and had animals in my life having grown up on a farm. At this year’s sleepover I will be representing Umhlanga Women Achievers (UWA) as well as the Rotary Club of Umhlanga. We also have around 10 UWA members taking part on the evening and both the club and the UWA are passionate about giving back to those in need. My bail has been set at R5000 but I’m hoping to raise more than that on the evening,” she said.

Another new face is La Lucia resident and wedding planner Gail Cuttler and she is raring to go.

“Like Vanessa this is my first one and I’m very excited. I’ve always been passionate about the SPCA and have in the past raised funds for them. Around 18 years ago I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro where I raised R30 000 for the association. When this opportunity arose I thought I love animals and I feel wherever I can help I should. We hope to raise awareness and funds for the SPCA,” she said.

The Durban & Coast SPCA kennel sleepover takes place on Saturday, August 15. The fundraising event sees friends and family sponsor your ‘adoption’ out of the kennels for the goal you set – (minimum R5 000). If people want to support and bail out those participating they can find the sponsorship pages on the SPCA website. Visitors can visit those sleeping over from 16:00 until 18:00.
