Giving it up to save a monkey

By letting go of a guilty pleasure here and there and donating R30 to the Monkey Helpline, the team of volunteers at the organisation could save a vervet monkey's life.

SKIPPING one of your favourite buys, such as a ham, cheese and tomato sandwich, one  milk tart, a single gin and tonic or two, two liters of soda you could make a difference to a monkey living or dying.

In a campaign run by the Monkey Helpline called #whatisR30, the organisation told its 1 865 Facebook fans that if each of them skipped one of their treats each month and rather donated the R30 to the non-profit organisation (NPO), they could collect R55 950, which will provide the organisation with enough funds to run and expand.

If only 1 268 people on the NPO’s Facebook page donate R30 a month, it would be enough to run the NPO for a month.

If you would like to make a monthly donation, fill in a debit form online.

About the Monkey Helpline

The Monkey Helpline, started in 1995, is a volunteer group, based in Westville, but operating throughout the province and also anywhere else in South Africa and abroad where their assistance and advice is requested, is a team of dedicated rescuers and rescue assistants, veterinarians, educators, monitors, fundraisers, administrative assistants and supporters.

They devote their time to educating people about the reasons why monkeys are around, why monkeys behave the way they do, the things people should do or not do when monkeys are around, and how to humanely keep monkeys away from those places where they are not welcome.

Contact Monkey Helpline on 082 659 4711 or 082 411 5444.
