uMhlanga Lagoon sewage spill contained

Sewage spill give the all clear but municipality says health warning will remain in place until the city is satisfied with the state of the river.

THE sewage leak at the Waterloo pump station has been contained and is no longer flowing into the uMhlanga River and Lagoon. That’s according to the eThekwini municipality.

The city is currently aerating the river below the pump station to remediate the river. The Lagoon has been scoured out due to the high spring tides which breached the river mouth and the high tide has scoured the lagoon to sea.

“This has resulted in the lagoon not being polluted at present and there is no evidence of any dead fish. The repairs to the trunk sewer will be completed in approximately two weeks and the sewer network will then be back to normal,” said municipal spokeswoman Tozi Mthethwa.

“Water quality tests are still being conducted to ensure that the water is safe and the recent results have shown improvement of the water quality. However, the ‘no swimming sign’ erected up in the area for a considerable time and it will remain visible.”

She added the health warning will remain in place until the Municipality is satisfied with the state of the river.
