Truck battery theft plagues uMhlanga

Police warn of spike in truck battery theft, especially from construction sites.

CONSTRUCTION sites around uMhlanga have provided the perfect platform for criminals to target truck batteries. Since last week five cases have been reported. Its believed scrap metal thieves are to blame. Truck batteries cost from R2 000 upwards and the easy access to them has prompted police to warn construction companies in the area.

“Because truck batteries are located on the outside of the truck, we believe the criminals are finding it easier to dismantle them and then use it for scrap. This is a warning to construction company owners to take added security measures if they are parking their trucks overnight,” Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said.

He also suggested purchasing anti-theft brackets and engraving the batteries with identifiable marks.
