Rotarians honour those who make a difference

Rotary Club of Durban North hosts its annual vocational awards show.

THE Rotary Club of Durban North held its annual Vocational Awards last Thursday evening to honour some of its outstanding citizens. During October, Rotary clubs are encouraged to focus on this avenue of Rotary service.

President of the club, Dael Connolly said the evening was to recognise people for their contribution to the Durban North community.

“Tonight is about honouring those who have worked tirelessly to help the local community,” she explained.

The club also honoured Justice Christopher Nicholson with the Wheel of Service Award.

“As a young advocate in the then South West Africa as early as 1970 he showed his commitment to the advancement of human rights by proposing that non-racial sport be introduced in the country. His fight for justice has resulted in him representing numerous victims of injustice and oppression.

Nicholson has acted as a judge in the Natal Provincial Division, a judge for the High Court and a judge for Labour Appeal Court.

“Since his retirement in 2010, he has continued through his literary talents to champion human rights. His extraordinary and selfless achievements, his courage and his compassion for others give outstanding effect to the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’,” she said.
