Durban North basketball tournament is a slam dunk
Peaceplayers South Africa’s eighth Annual Girls’ Basketball Festival brought 200 girls and coaches together at Danville Park Girls’ School.
PEACEPLAYERS South Africa (PPSA) recently hosted the eighth Annual Girls’ Basketball Festival at Danville Park Girls’ School.
The event brought together 200 high school girls and coaches, as well as several high schools teams, who are friends of PeacePlayers, including hosts Danville, Northlands Girls’ High School, Durban Girls’ High School and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.
The festival’s purpose was to create a safe space to celebrate and empower young girls and women as leaders, on and off the court.

PeacePlayers, an NPO, was started in 2001 and uses sport to unite, educate and inspire young people in different communities offering mentoring and life skills programmes.
Alison Misselhorn, PeacePlayers executive director, explained the significance of the tournament.
“We have three major events every year, two of them are city-wide tournaments attracting 600 children across gender. Every August we have one girls’ festival with the idea of celebrating and inspiring women and girls and giving them a safe space to play together,” she said.
The basketball tournament comes as the country commemorated national Women’s Month.
