THE Durban Country Club (DCC) recently played host to the inaugural DCC Schools’ Team Championship. More than 20 teams from 15 different schools, including Northwood School, participated at the event. However, of far greater significance, was a group of disadvantaged young boys from KwaMashu primary schools who were invited to participate in the event.

They were coached by golfing professional, Don Gammon, at the club and also had some time to tee off on the range.
Alan Lukan, sales and marketing manager at the club, said the purpose of the event was twofold.

“We wanted to develop a competition that looked at improving and enhancing schoolboy golf, but also to develop the youngsters of the game. They are the future of the sport. It was fantastic to have the boys here today; they don’t get much exposure to playing at one of the best golf courses in Africa.

“On top of their visit, the boys will get to come back over a period of 18 months to use the facilities. We hope to inspire them and give them an all-round experience of playing on such a pristine golf course,” he said.

The event was co-sanctioned by the KZN Golf Union and sponsored by Elan Property Group.
