No car thefts in Durban North or GWP in a year

Stats reveal that not a single car theft was reported in Durban North and Greenwood Park in the past financial year, a decrease of 100 per cent.

WHILE the police continue to paint this year’s crime stats in a positive light, some glaring inconsistencies have appeared and many residents are now questioning the consistency of them. One of the most obvious ones is that not a single car theft was reported in Durban North or Greenwood Park (GWP), from March 2014 to April 2015. What’s more several of the provinces most populated areas, including Umlazi, Durban Central Phoenix and Margate also registered no car thefts.

Looking at the crime statistics which are available to the public, last year Durban North had 297 cases of car theft, while this year, the figure is zero, a decrease of 100 per cent.

However, far from being left red in the face, national police spokesman, Lt General Solomon Makgale, insists the inconsistencies reflected in some of the stats are merely ‘glitches’.

“It is a technical glitch. Those stats are available and our team have been working very hard to fix them to make them available to the public. I can assure residents that the stats read out by General Riah Phiyega were aggregated stats and would have included those that are not reflecting on the individual station stats,” he said.

He added the correct stats would be available later today.
