Durban North resident helps catch suspected aluminium thief

A vigilant resident’s report of suspicious noises led to a swift security response at a property under construction in Prestondale.

MARSHALL Security has commended the vigilance of the Durban North community after a suspect was apprehended for allegedly stripping aluminium from door frames at a property under construction in Prestondale.

Tyron Powell, Marshall Security spokesperson, said the company’s Emergency Dispatch Centre was alerted to the incident at 10:47 on Monday (October 26) by a vigilant member of the public. The resident had reported hearing suspicious noises coming from inside the house, which is under construction on Fern Road.

Powell said Marshall Security Armed Response Officers responded immediately and allegedly caught the suspect in the act.

“Upon arrival, officers noticed that the pedestrian gate had been forcibly opened, raising suspicions that someone had gained unauthorised access to the property.”

He said additional officers arrived to assist with the search of the property.

“During the search, officers discovered a suspect inside one of the bedrooms, actively stripping aluminium from the door frames,” said Powell. “The suspect was immediately apprehended, and a bag containing aluminium that had already been cut into smaller pieces was recovered.”

The suspect was handed over to Durban North SAPS and transported to the police station for further investigation and legal processing.
