Show the ‘stache waves of love
Movember surf contest to light up the waves on the North Coast.
THE annual Movember Off The Lip Surf Jam is set for Saturday, 21 November in front of the Beach Bums restaurant on the KZN North Coast. The event will see 72 surfers participating in a fun retro surf competition with the hopes of creating awareness and raising funds for the Movember Foundation.
Northglen News recently caught up with an uMhlanga resident and event organiser Dane Patterson, to find out about the Quiksilver sponsored event.
“It’s always a great event because you are raising funds for charity by doing something fun. The surfers participating in the competition normally sport their well-groomed moustaches, dress up in 70s surf attire and use old-school surfboards from the era,” explained Patterson.
“Something unique about this year’s edition will be a ladies’ Mo Sistas’ division, as well as the Legends Over-50 division. Various fun awards, such as Vert Alert, Spin To Win, Wave Waster and Best Dressed Mo In Character, will be handed out to surfers and spectators alike. There are also some throwbacks, with single and twin fin surfboards from the 70s era on hand for surfers to test-drive, and old-school rock ‘n roll surf tunes will be the order of the day.”
All proceeds raised on the day through the compulsory R100 participation fee will be donated to the Movember Foundation, which in turn funds various programmes surrounding men’s prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
The action gets underway at 10am with the finals expected to be held at 3pm.
