R16 000 taken in Durban North Post Office break-in

A substantial amount of cash was stolen from the Durban North Post Office safe.

THE Durban North Post Office has become the latest victim of crime following a break-in on Saturday evening. At least R16 000 in cash was stolen from the post office’s safe, confirmed Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS. What’s more, there was no forced entry, it’s believed thieves managed to steal a pair of keys from one of the staff at the post office.

“According to our report, the staff member locked up on Saturday afternoon and put the keys in her handbag. She then used an ATM in the area and gave her bag to a friend to look after. It was only the next morning that she noticed the keys had been stolen from her handbag.

“When she arrived at work, she saw the front door was open and the safe had been broken into and emptied out. R16 000 in cash was taken and we are currently looking for any information that will lead to the arrest of the culprits,” Deokaran said.

The post office was closed on Monday while detectives were taking fingerprints.
