Glenashley rapist handed 18 year sentence

41-year-old man convicted following Durban North rape in 2011.

A MAN has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping a woman in Durban North. On Friday, the Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced Prince Mkhize (41) to a total of 18 years imprisonment for rape.

In November 2011, Mkhize had approached and dragged his victim (49) into the bushes outside her yard at her Glenashley home.

“A case of rape was opened at Durban North police station for investigation and the docket was transferred to Durban Central Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation.

“With the assistance of Chubb Security Company the members were able to trace the whereabouts of the suspect and he was arrested the same day. The accused appeared in Durban Regional Court several times until he was sentenced,” confirmed SAPS provincial spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the Durban Central FCS for their commitment which led to the prosecution of the accused.

“We will always make sure that criminals who prey on vulnerable women and children are kept behind bars,” she said.
