Northwood School learner recognised for exceptional service
Keegan Doyle recently received the Photo Of The Year Award as well as the Service to Northwood Award for hours dedicated to the school.
WHEN Northwood School learner Keegan Doyle snapped a shot of the Northwood School Knight mascot leading the team into a match on Old Boys Day, little did he know he would capture a winning moment.
The matric learner captured the noise, the energy and emotion of the crowd around him and was recently rewarded at the Sports, Culture and Service Awards Evening.
Keegan, the captain of the school’s Press Club was recently awarded the Photo Of The Year Award as well as the Service to Northwood Award for devoted countless hours to capturing and sharing the Northwood story.

“Winning photograph of the year is one of my goals every year. I was extremely grateful for everyone involved in my journey over the past years. The moment was especially special because this has been my last year at Northwood and was my last chance to win the award again. I don’t often ask for recognition, but that was the night that I could reflect on all that I’d achieved, in front of my school. I’m happy that I could forever leave my piece of legacy,” he said.
Speaking on the winning photo, Keegan said it was all about capturing the ‘emotion’ on the day.
“The photo was taken on Old Boys Day. Building up to the day, I knew that a winning moment would present itself, I just had to be there. As the first team rugby slowly walked down the stairs towards the field, I positioned myself at the end of the tunnel. I wanted to capture the emotion of the day. As the knight ran through the tunnel, it was perfect, with the blue smoke, Old Boys and kids cheering on, and the flag and packed crowd as the background. That was the first photo that I edited that night, because I knew that it perfectly captured what a Northwood Old Boys’ Day looks like,” he said.

Keegan joined the press club in Grade Eight, having never used a camera before.
“My parents encouraged me to try it out. Fortunately there were fantastic leaders in the school, as staff and of course my parents, and I’ve never looked back. I strongly believe in serving others and my school, which is why dedicating thousands of hours to the service has always been a pleasure. Since becoming the captain of the Press Club, it has been my goal to grow the press club and support the juniors, which I feel has been done. In the future, I aim to continue serving others through photography. I’m going to study at Tuks, where I would like to take photos. I also aim to use photography in conservation. I love wildlife, and I can play my part with the camera,” he said.
At the recent Speech Day he was also awarded the Laude Dignus White Tie for Loyalty and Service to Northwood.
“Over five years, Keegan has given countless hours to the Northwood Press Club, becoming one of its most committed members in the club’s 13-year history. Appointed Captain in Grade 11, he continued in this leadership role as a Grade 12 learner, mentoring younger members and leading with professionalism, reliability and an outstanding work ethic. From covering sporting fixtures and school events – often across multiple locations in one weekend – to sorting, selecting, editing and preparing photographs for publication, Keegan has captured Northwood’s moments with exceptional skill and dedication,” the school said in a statement.
